The Hole, Part 1

The Hole, Part 1

In 1970, Darlene and I and been married for about a year.  I was trying to be a loving husband and picking up some of the domestic chores around our one-bedroom apartment.  Darlene had a particularly bright colored blouse made from some synthetic fabric.  “Use a cold iron on it!” she advised.  Well, in my childhood home, there was no need for a cold iron.  So, I plugged it in, heated it up and began ironing her favorite blouse.  I just touched the blouse with the iron and “Sssssst!” and the blouse was ruined.  There where the iron had only touched was a big, iron-sized hole.  I panicked.  I thought of trying to stitch it up, but the hole was too big.  So we had to throw the blouse in the trash.  It was ruined and useless.

Inside each of us is a hole made by the sin in our lives that needs to be filled.  We try to fill it with all kinds of things – sex, gambling, addictions, drinking, activities, accomplishments, accumulations, and the list goes on.  The problem is, like me trying to stitch together my wife’s ruined blouse, I only made the hole bigger and the fabric more tattered. Does that describe your life?

A famous preacher, author, and politician (King Solomon) said that after a lifetime of searching, the only thing that filled the void in his life was God. (Ecclesiastes 12:9-14) Sin will only ruin your life, but only God can make it whole. Confess your sin and your need to God.  Ask His forgiveness and He will do something supernatural in your life.  He will forgive you and give you eternal life.  Commit your life to Him, and He will guide you through His Word. Will you commit your life to Jesus today?
